Most tree frogs don’t move around much, literally sitting like a bump on a log. That is, except when it is feeding time. One of the great joys I get from owning a frog is watching him stalk his prey and chase after it. White’s Tree Frogs can eat mealworms, crickets, and tiny mice. If you go with crickets or waxworms, you should feed your frog a few critters 2 or 3 times a week.
White’s Tree Frogs will eat and eat, so beware of overfeeding. If the folds over your frog’s eyes begin to grow to the point they cover its eyes, it is time to put your friend on a diet.
Crickets
For many white’s tree frogs (including mine), the meal of choice is crickets. They are pretty easy to keep around and it is fun to watch a tree frog stalk its prey. A few large crickets two or three times a week should be plenty for your frog.
These videos do show owners feeding their tree frogs with tweezers. You don’t need to feed your pet frog this way. Simply shake out a few from a tube that comes with your Kricket Keeper and let your White’s Tree Frog do what it loves to do.
Waxworms and Mealworms
I’ve spoken to some owners who found that their frogs were too bored by waxworms and even refused to eat them. I feed my dumpy tree frog waxworms occasionally. He is generally not too excited about them and will watch them for a while (looking a little confused) before deciding that he will eat them. The nice thing about waxworms is that they won’t escape and hop around your house like crickets sometimes will.
Waxworms can be kept in a refrigerator and will be okay for about a week. When it is time to feed your pet frog, pull a few waxworms out and place them in a dish (outside of your frog’s habitat). Let the waxworms warm up for 15-20 minutes until they start moving around a little. Once they start crawling a little, you can scatter them about your frog’s cage. Below is a video of a frog enjoying waxworms. Again, you don’t need to feed your frog one waxworm at a time with tongs as this owner does. The added amusement in this video is the frog appears to have minimal interest in eating right now.
As you can see, it isn’t as sporting as chasing a cricket.
Pinkie Mice
I’ve never had the desire to feed my frog a baby mouse, but that is an option too. If you have the stomach for it there are some videos of larger pinkie mice being eaten on Youtube. The video below is a white’s tree frog eating a much smaller pinkie – not much larger than a big cricket.

Hi there, I have two baby whites who seem to be doing well, I have a quick question on how many crickets should I be feeding them per day. At the moment I am feeding them 6 medium small crickets every day and was wondering whether this is enough? Many thanks.

hello can any one tell me how i can tell that my frog is a male or female
i have heard that the male get darker sticky pads on there feet… they also croak at night. i am currenlty not sure if mine is a girl or boy… he has croaked once, but have white stickies so far…. hmmmmm
yes, every other day and just a few for each frog. you, and me, dont want them to get fat!
Jake: only male white’s tree frogs croak, so if you rub your frog’s belly and it doesn’t croak, it’s a female.
i have a whites tree frog and its not eating and im scared of it dieing so if you have any tips that would be great .

Hello,
My name is Kathy Kroon. I bought a White’s Tree Frog in March of this year. At first, he only ate one small cricket a day. In June, he gradually began to eat more and by July, he would eat 4 small crickets per day. Now, I feed him between 2 and 3 large crickets daily and he eats them. My frog’s name is Edgar. He croaks often and I enjoy listening to him. Edgar has doubled in size since I first bought him. When I first purchased Edgar, I thought he might be sick because he had such a small appetite, but now, he really loves to eat. I should probably consider limiting his intake of crickets. He lives in a 20-gallon tank.
I have two whites dumpys, ralph and tulip ralph eats all of tulips crickets and she is getting skinny. I’m worried. What should I do?
Hello I own an Eastern Grey tree frog and just bought a white’s dumpy. I have them in the same tank for now. The Grey is 2 1/4 inches long and 2 inches wide n i believe to be a female. Its a decently sized frog n i keep it well fed but dont over feed it. The White’s is two inches long n just shy of n inch wide. I believe it should be safe from the grey, but when the white gets full grown will the grey be safe?
Personally, I have no experience in keeping more than one frog. I currently have one whites tree frog. Edgar is my first pet frog and I have kept him alive for six months. However, I have heard that it is not a good idea to mix frog species together. When your Dumpy frog gets older, she might eat your Eastern Grey Tree frog. I have also read that frogs secrete chemicals that can be harmful to other species. As I said, I am not an expert. I love listening to Grey tree frogs. Maybe some day, I will get one as a pet. Did you catch your Gray Tree frog or buy her from a pet store?
Does anyone know if I can feed my Whites Tree Frog small feeder fish???
how can you tell if you frog is hungry or not?
If your going to keep more than one frog in a cage make sure they are of the same breed, size and sex. Unless you want to breed them. When you buy them at commercial pet shops like pet supermarket they tend to be malnurished. Just keep feeding them fresh meal worms, waxworms and crickets everyother day amd make sure their cage is clean amd free of chemicals. Because the are malnurished they are prone to parasites and infections. Also watch out for red-leg. They’re legs will literally turn red on the bottom. If that is the case they will probably die, cause of death: malnurished. As far as knowing how many to feed them depends on the size and condition of the frog. Usually a 3in frog, like mine, eats about 10 meal worms every two days. Or I get a dozen large crickets and dump him in his cage and they are gone in about 3-4 days.
The Crickets have to go, I have about 20 large crickets in a kricket keeper and they have maged to get their body half way out, past the tubes, into my room, this is after 2 massive escape attempts. If i put the calcium on them, can ifeed my dumpy only meal worms?
If your white tree frog is hungry, you will know! Put a few small crickets in the habitat and see what happens. If they frog is hungry, he will pounce all over the food. If he is not hungry, he will show limited interest or none at all. Be careful not to overfeed your frog. Whites tree frogs have a reputation for eating non-stop if you allow them to!
Have had my dumpy tree frog for years now, but now when I hold him, he squirts out all this liquid all over me. I’m not sure if it’s pee or what? He never used to do that. Does anyone know if that’s actually urine or why he’d be suddenly start to do that now, when he didn’t for years? Thank you!
One of my frogs do that but its usually when i pick him up and he doesn’t realize it, I think its because I scared him. I’m sure its urine though.
